"The Lone Woman Of Ghalas-hat"
By Rice D. Oliver.
Told from the imagined point of view of a historical Nicoleno Indian who survived alone on an island (originally called Ghalas-hat) off the coast of Santa Barbara, this is the gripping true story of a brave and resourceful woman. When the padres of Santa Barbara Mission decided to remove her people from the island by boat in 1835, the 18-year-old mother discovered her baby missing and swam desperately back to shore. Thought to be lost at sea, she reached the island and lived alone there for 18 years, fishing, hunting, and making her own shelter and clothing. When she was finally found and brought to the mainland, she died within weeks. Grades 3-8. Illustrated. 29 pages. ©1993.
