Corporation

California Weekly Explorer was incorporated under the laws of the State of California in October, 1979 for the purpose of advancing and enhancing the teaching and learning of social studies in the schools of the state by developing and providing unique materials and programs. It specializes in social studies live performances for grades 4, 5, and 6 in the area of California, American, and Ancient World history and geography. The late Rice Donald Oliver was the executive publisher and founder. Betty Oliver is the president of the corporation. Rice Oliver had been a teacher in both junior high and senior high schools in California. He had also been a high school principal and an educational consultant in developing and establishing new schools. His experience included the development of curriculum and the screening and hiring of teachers and other staff for schools. In addition, he had been employed by several large publishing companies in the development and implementation of social studies curriculum materials and state adopted text series.

Administration

Mr. Oliver developed the California Weekly Explorer; the California history and geography newspaper that has been used in fourth grade classes throughout the state for over 20 years. He also created and produced the Walk Through California, a two and a half hour live student involvement program that has been presented in thousands of classrooms in every area of California during the past 25 years. This program has become known as "the field trip that comes to your school" and has received many favorable reviews from educators and historical organizations, including the American Association for State and Local History award for innovative teaching of state and local history. He is the author of many articles for various publications and his book, Student Atlas of California, is now in its 5th edition and is a standard reference source for classrooms and libraries all over the United States.

Betty Oliver has served as an administrative secretary in law firms and for non-profit organizations. She currently supervises the daily operation of the corporation. She has taught classes on the high school level and is a contributor to the development of many of the programs of CWE, Inc. She also edits a family history newspaper

Education Staff

CWE employs qualified personnel to present the hundreds of programs scheduled by schools each year. In addition to their academic training, all of them have a wide variety of communication talents that enables them to motivate and educate students in captivating ways. Their backgrounds include teaching, music, magic, acting, cheerleading, naturalist and museum experience. Each employee is knowledgeable in the subject areas covered by the programs and has completed additional company training in presentation and student management techniques. Every week, CWE receives praise from teachers, parents, and students concerning the dedication, energy and enthusiasm of its presenters. All employees are cleared through fingerprinting and background checks with the California Department of Justice as required by PC11105 for certification for criminal records check in compliance with AB 1610 and AB 1612. In addition, CWE completes a background check with past employers and references for each newly hired employee.

Legal Compliance

CWE, Inc. complies with all local state and federal laws in employment practices and regulations. All employees are covered by WORKMEN’S COMPENSATION INSURANCE and certification is available upon request.  The company is covered by BUSINESS LIABILITY AND MEDICAL INSURANCE. All company and employee cars are additionally insured.
